Buenos Aires Parrilla
and Asado Restaurants

Serving Mouth Watering Steaks

Buenos Aires parrilla and ‘asado’ restaurants are perfect places to enjoy an Argentinean steak. Both are well worth experiencing while in Buenos Aires – unless of course you’re a vegetarian! Here I’ll explain the difference between a parrilla and asado restaurant and what you’ll find sizzling on the grill.

A typical Buenos Aires parrilla restaurant

A Buenos Aires parrilla restaurant is a typical Argentine steakhouse serving up huge chunks of Argentina’s beef cooked over crackling wood called ‘al carbon’. These restaurants usually have excellent meat and at first glance are very similar in style to steakhouses found all over the US and Europe.

However, in a Buenos Aires parrilla, not only can you pick and choose from a range of huge steaks but also from a selection of extras including sausage, blood sausage and every other part of the cow imaginable as well as chicken and veal. If you’re uncertain what to go for, try a bit of everything with a typical parrillada mixta – or mixed grill – an Argentine favorite.

An ‘asado’ – the gaucho method of cooking meat

An ‘asado’ is a traditional Argentinean way of cooking meat and is the chosen method used by the Argentinean gaucho. It’s also the nation’s preferred method of cooking beef whether in the home or at a party.

Here I am pretending
to cook on an asado!

If you aren’t lucky enough to be invited to an Argentinean’s home for an asado, then you could try the next best thing - an asado restaurant. They’re instantly recognizable – look for the lumps of beef and carcasses of pigs hanging in the window on crosses made of metal poles, slowly cooking over the embers of a large wooden fire.

Buenos Aires parrilla and asado restaurants can be found all over the city. Paying high tourist prices rarely guarantees the best steak though. Some of my most memorable steaks have been consumed in restaurants where the locals choose to eat. Look for the simple restaurants on street corners where the locals are eating and you’ll generally find good meat.

My all time favorite Buenos Aires parrilla is in Palermo Viejo and is one of the locals favorites. The parrilla 'La Cabrera' really is a cut above the rest.

Some other excellent steakhouses in Buenos Aires are:

La Diablada- Venezuela 1402, Congreso Tel - 4381-4766/8677
This welcoming parrilla was where I had my first steak in Buenos Aires, it was the perfect introduction to Argentinean dining and I still have a soft spot for it today. There are also excellent Spanish and Italian sister restaurants next door so you can order an excellent Diablada steak in all three - great if you’re craving after steak and your partner fancies something else.

El Desnivel- Defensa 855, San Telmo Tel - 4361 4685
This rustic restaurant is packed to the rafters with tourists and locals. This Buenos Aires parrilla has a buzzing atmosphere and the cheeky waiters (including an Argentinean giant) help you feel part of the whole fun experience…

Lo de Paka – Congreso 2001, Belgrano - Tel - 4701 3857
Huge juicy portions of steak served in a relaxed atmosphere make this one of the local’s favorites.

Madero Sur – Corner of - Elvira Rawson de Dellepiane and Balbin, Puerto Madero Tel: 5412-6925
This homely restaurant was made for dining outside on a warm summer night. It's also one of the few places in Puerto Madero that’s really quite good and great value for money.

El Mirasol de la Recova - Posadas 1032, Recoleta - Tel: 5412-6925
Located in the wealthiest part of the city this well regarded parrilla is a great place to enjoy an Argentinean feast after a visit to the fabulous Recoleta cemetery.
