Tango in Argentina
The home of tango in Argentina is firmly routed in the Buenos Aires. In the capital, you can barely turn a corner without being faced with a reminder of that this is the birthplace of tango. From the posters of Carlos Gardel on the sidewalk to the tango songs emanating from the radios in shops - tango is everywhere.

Rarely, as tourists did we see it elsewhere in Argentina, even though we also visited Patagonia, Mendoza and other parts in the north of the country. You’d need to look hard, or know a local to experience the dance outside the capital.
The heartbeat of tango is definitely in Buenos Aires.
Whether you’re a tango dancer or not, an evening of music and dance is a must. There are numerous Broadway style tango shows all competing against each other or you could try a more authentic evening with a live orchestra at a milonga (a tango dance). Tango comes alive in Buenos Aires late at night, so be ready to stay up until the early hours.

Tango in Argentina is danced mainly by an older crowd, who easily manage the late nights (and many early mornings). A younger crowd also dance tango, but tend to go for the nights of Nuevo Tango where the electronic beat attracts beautiful young dancers. In the suburbs you’ll find social clubs which turn into milongas at the weekend and families gather to chat, socialise and dance tango. The wealth and variety of different types of milongas ensures there’s something for everyone. Many of the milongas in the centre of Buenos Aires were tourist friendly; others slightly out of the centre could be little frosty. We were lucky though, our Argentinean friends showed us around and allowed us a glimpse into the tango world of porteños – which of course we’ll share with you. Tango in Argentina has a specific etiquette – a world away from the milongas back home. There are unsaid rules about how you get asked for a dance and once on the dance floor, there are even more rules to ensure the dance is enjoyed by all.
